The History of Monchhichi: From 1974 to Collectable Icon
Share
With their soft furry bodies, freckled faces and famous thumb-sucking pose, Monchhichi dolls have become one of Japan’s most recognisable collectable characters.
Where Did Monchhichi Begin?
Monchhichi was created by Japanese toy company Sekiguchi and first released in 1974.
The original design combined a soft plush body with a vinyl face, hands and feet. Its most distinctive feature was a hand designed to fit inside its mouth, creating the familiar thumb-sucking pose.
The name Monchhichi is said to combine the French words mon, meaning “my”, and petit, meaning something small and cute.
Becoming an International Favourite
Monchhichi became popular in Japan shortly after its release. Sekiguchi began exporting the dolls in 1975, initially to Austria and German-speaking European countries before expanding into other markets.
Different outfits, sizes and family characters followed. An animated television series was introduced in 1980, helping Monchhichi develop from a single toy into a complete character world.
Sales paused in many markets during the mid-1980s, but strong demand from collectors led to Monchhichi being relaunched in Japan, Germany and New York in 1996.
Anniversary Releases and Collectable Editions

Monchhichi celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2004 with the wedding of Monchhichi-kun and Monchhichi-chan. The anniversary also introduced Bebichhichi, the baby members of the Monchhichi family.
The brand continued to produce seasonal outfits, collaborations, regional exclusives and limited editions. Older dolls and unusual releases gradually became desirable collectables rather than simply childhood toys.
In 2024, Monchhichi celebrated its 50th anniversary with commemorative dolls, pop-up shops, events and special merchandise.
Why Is Monchhichi Still Popular?
For older collectors, Monchhichi often brings back memories of childhood. Newer fans are attracted by its Japanese heritage, distinctive design and connection with modern kawaii culture.
The character also photographs particularly well, leading collectors to share displays, outfits and adventures through social media.
Sekiguchi states that more than 70 million Monchhichi dolls have been sold across over 30 countries since 1974, which is fairly impressive for a small furry creature whose principal activity is sucking its thumb.
